Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul and Trump’s top adviser on government efficiency, sat across from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The subject: deep staff cuts across the federal government. According to The New York Times, Musk had been pushing for sweeping layoffs, but Rubio wasn’t moving fast enough for his liking.

“You have fired nobody,” Musk reportedly scoffed, accusing Rubio of dragging his feet. Rubio, visibly irritated, fired back. He reminded Musk that 1,500 State Department officials had taken buyouts. Then, with a jab of sarcasm, he added: “Do you want me to rehire all those people just so you can fire them again for the show?”

Musk, unimpressed, dismissed Rubio’s efforts as insufficient.

Trump Intervenes

The heated exchange unfolded as President Trump sat with his arms folded, watching in silence. Finally, he stepped in.

“Marco’s doing a great job,” Trump said, defending Rubio’s approach. It was a subtle but clear shift. While the president had publicly backed Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting efforts, he now appeared to be taking a more measured stance.

Trump announced a recalibration: Cabinet secretaries would retain final authority over hiring and firing decisions, with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) playing only an advisory role. It was a significant move—one that suggested the billionaire’s unchecked influence was beginning to meet some resistance.

For many inside the administration, the meeting marked a turning point. Cabinet officials had grown increasingly uneasy about Musk’s bulldozer approach, and this clash revealed that Trump was finally listening to their concerns.

According to Reuters, the meeting was prompted by a flood of complaints from agency heads. Some Republican lawmakers had also raised alarm bells, saying their constituents—especially veterans—were furious about proposed cuts.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins directly challenged Musk during the meeting. He warned that slashing staff in his department would have dire consequences for thousands of former service members—a crucial voter base for Trump.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also took Musk to task, pointing out that his proposed layoffs included air traffic controllers, even as plane crashes were making headlines. Musk remained unmoved, insisting that many hires under diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes were unqualified and should be let go.

Musk’s Future in the Trump Administration

Musk later called the meeting “productive.” But those in the room saw something different—a man visibly frustrated that his influence was being curbed.

The question now is whether Musk will accept Trump’s shift in approach—or whether he’ll push back harder.

In the aftermath of the meeting, Trump attempted to downplay the clash. “No clash, I was there, you’re just a troublemaker,” he told a reporter who asked about it. “Elon gets along great with Marco and they’re both doing a fantastic job.”

Yet Trump’s subsequent post on Truth Social painted a different picture. He assured the public that future cuts would be made with a “scalpel, not a hatchet,” signalling a retreat from Musk’s aggressive style.

For now, the White House has drawn a line. But with Musk’s deep pockets, social media influence, and close ties to Trump, his role in reshaping the federal government is far from over. The uneasy truce may not last long.
