“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” the billionaire wrote on X, his social media platform.
“The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” he said, referring to his “department of government efficiency.”

The day before his departure, Musk broke with Trump by criticizing his massive tax and spending bill that the president has dubbed the "big, beautiful bill." The bill, which includes Trump's domestic agenda on items ranging from border security to tax cuts, passed the House along party lines last week. It now heads to the Senate.
Musk once appointed himself as Trump's 'first buddy' and his departure was sudden and unceremonious. Musk did not have a formal conversation with Trump before announcing he was leaving the administration, according to a source with knowledge of the matter, who added that his exit was decided “at a senior staff level.”
What happens to DOGE now?
The South African-born tech tycoon had been designated as a "special government employee" - allowing him to work a federal job for 130 days each year.As the head of DOGE and a senior adviser to the White House, Musk spearheaded a controversial campaign to swiftly eliminate what he labeled as “waste and fraud” within the government, significantly downsizing the federal workforce. DOGE, staffed by over 100 government employees, is expected to continue its operations despite Musk's departure. However, questions remain about how much influence the group will retain without its high-profile leader at the helm.
Musk had already shifted his attention back to his business empire after Tesla, his electric car company, suffered financial losses after he became a polarizing figure as President Donald Trump's team. Musk told investors on an earnings call last month that the time he allocates to Doge "will drop significantly" and that he would be "allocating far more of my time to Tesla".
