Elon Musk: ‘First Buddy’ or the next big headache for US President-elect Donald Trump?

“It’s a bit of a joke, but he’s in on the joke. He’s great. Who wouldn’t want one of the brightest minds of our time in the circle of people doing the right thing for this country?” With Musk continuing to play a pivotal role in Trump’s political orbit, it’s clear that the two men have formed an unlikely but powerful bond—at least on the surface.
But while Lara's public remarks are glowing, behind the scenes, reports suggest that Trump may be growing weary of Musk’s frequent visits and his increasing influence. Despite the public praise, the tech billionaire’s presence at Mar-a-Lago, where he’s reportedly been staying in a $2,000-per-night cottage just steps away from Trump’s residence, seems to be wearing thin. According to The Telegraph, Trump has privately complained about Musk’s "clingy" behaviour, with the former president apparently tired of the tech mogul dropping in unannounced.
Musk’s influence and Trump’s growing discomfort
While Trump has praised Musk as a crucial donor and supporter—helping fund his re-election bid to the tune of over $250 million—the constant proximity between the two seems to be rubbing Trump the wrong way. Musk’s frequent appearances have allowed him to attend key meetings, influence personnel decisions, and even participate in awkward dinners with other tech moguls, including Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. It’s clear that Musk has embedded himself deeply within Trump’s inner circle—but not everyone is thrilled about it.
Reports suggest that Trump is becoming increasingly irritated by Musk’s near-daily presence. “Trump does complain a bit to people about how Musk is around a lot,” said Maggie Haberman, White House correspondent for The New York Times. “He's really parked himself in Trump’s face.” With Musk often in the spotlight, it seems that the very presence of the world’s richest man could soon become a source of friction between the two powerful figures.
Despite the public camaraderie between the two men, experts predict that their growing closeness will eventually lead to a clash. CNN analyst Kara Swisher believes that the two will eventually butt heads over their massive egos. “One of my favourite movies is ‘Highlander,’ and ‘there can be only one.’ And that’s gonna be Donald Trump,” she said. With both men accustomed to being the center of attention, Swisher believes their need for the spotlight will lead to inevitable friction.
Swisher also pointed out that many tech CEOs are publicly cozying up to Trump out of fear of Musk’s influence. "Trump does not like to share the spotlight,” Swisher noted, suggesting that Musk’s growing influence within Trump’s circle might soon push the former president to take a step back. "In comparison of the need for attention between Bannon and Musk, Bannon looks like a kitty cat. Elon needs a lot of attention, and Trump will be irritated by that,” she added.
The ‘First Buddy’ fallout?
The real question now is whether Musk’s presence in Trump’s inner circle is sustainable. While Lara Trump calls Musk “First Buddy,” the relationship may not last if Musk’s dominance grows too strong. As the two men navigate their powerful egos, the possibility of a public fallout looms large. If the “honeymoon period” fades, Trump may find himself needing to reclaim his spotlight—something Musk may not be willing to relinquish.
