Donald Trump, JD Vance to dominate midterm convention as Republicans face mounting concerns

Donald Trump is set to dominate a major Republican gathering in Dallas next month, with the president scheduled to appear on both nights of an unusual convention designed to rally the party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The two-day event, scheduled for September 9 and 10, will feature Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Republican candidates from across the country as the party attempts to sharpen its message ahead of November.

The Republican National Committee is presenting the gathering as a high-profile showcase of Trump's agenda and the candidates expected to carry it into the midterms.


But the event also comes at a politically difficult moment for Republicans, who are facing concerns over high consumer prices, declining enthusiasm for the president and growing energy among Democratic voters.

Trump and JD Vance to headline separate nights

Trump will take the spotlight on the second night of the convention, while Vance is scheduled to headline the opening evening.

The president's appearance on both nights underscores how closely the Republican Party's midterm strategy remains tied to Trump and his political brand.

According to the RNC, the convention will focus on the administration's record, Republican candidates and the policy agenda the party wants to put before voters ahead of the 2026 elections.

Candidate showcases are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each evening, giving contenders in competitive races a national platform as Republicans prepare for what could be a closely fought battle for control in Washington.

Republicans target Democrats and the progressive left

A major part of the convention's messaging is expected to focus on portraying Democrats as increasingly aligned with the party's left wing.

Republicans are likely to highlight the rise of Democratic socialist candidates and other progressive figures who have gained momentum this year, using them to argue that the Democratic Party is moving further away from the political centre.

The strategy could become a central feature of the broader Republican campaign message heading into November, particularly in competitive districts where the party hopes to frame the election as a choice between Trump's agenda and what it describes as an increasingly radical Democratic platform.

Tax cuts, healthcare and border security on the agenda

The opening night is expected to feature discussions on several of Trump's key domestic priorities.

Programming will focus on tax cuts, healthcare affordability, immigration and border security, trade and efforts to expand domestic manufacturing. The RNC also plans to feature workers and other Americans who it says have been affected by the administration's policies.

The second night will turn its attention to families and workers benefiting from policies involving taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security. Other segments are expected to highlight prescription drug costs, border security and Americans who were released from overseas detention.

The programme also includes a tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed earlier this year.

A 9/11 anniversary tribute

The convention will also mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Families of first responders are expected to take part in a special segment commemorating those who died or were affected by the attacks, placing one of the most significant anniversaries in recent American history alongside the party's broader election messaging.

Trump allies push the MAHA agenda

The Republican gathering will also make room for the growing Make America Healthy Again, or MAHA, movement within Trump's political coalition.

One planned segment will focus on chronic disease and what organisers describe as corporate influence over public health agencies. The discussion is expected to echo arguments made by prominent figures in the MAHA movement about food, healthcare, pharmaceutical companies and the role of government health institutions.

The convention will additionally spotlight proposals to ban members of Congress from trading stocks — a policy Trump has supported despite facing repeated criticism and accusations from opponents over his own business interests and the presidency.

Iran war notably absent from convention plans

While the RNC has laid out an extensive programme covering domestic policy, the preliminary schedule does not include a segment dedicated to foreign policy.

There was also no announced programming focused on the war in Iran, an issue that has drawn public criticism and added another challenge for the administration as Republicans head into the midterm campaign.

The omission could prove notable given the convention's stated goal of presenting voters with a comprehensive case for Trump's agenda.

Republicans look to turn the convention into a midterm launchpad

RNC Chairman Joe Gruters described the event as a two-day presentation of the party's priorities and the stakes of the November election.

The Dallas convention is not a traditional presidential nominating convention. Instead, it is being positioned as an early midterm campaign showcase, combining policy messaging, candidate introductions and appearances from the Republican Party's biggest political figures.

And despite a packed programme featuring candidates, administration policies and Republican causes, the central attraction is unlikely to be in doubt.

With Donald Trump appearing across both nights and JD Vance opening the event, the Dallas convention is set to reinforce a political reality that has defined the Republican Party for years: even in a midterm election, the biggest figure on the stage will be Trump.
