Diwali 2024, an auspicious celebration for Hindus worldwide, will be observed with great enthusiasm both in India and in communities around the globe, including the United States. This festival of lights will be marked by gatherings in community centers, temples, and homes, where families and friends come together to celebrate with traditional sweets, music, and cultural performances.

Observed on the 15th day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu lunisolar calendar, Diwali typically falls in October or November. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on Thursday, October 31, 2024. This day commemorates the return of Lord Rama and Mata Sita to Ayodhya after vanquishing the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and marking the end of their 14-year exile.

Diwali 2024: Lakshmi Puja Rituals

An essential part of Diwali festivities is the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, believed to bring prosperity and blessings. Many devotees fast throughout the day and break it after completing Lakshmi Puja, which is performed in homes and offices adorned with marigold flowers, mango leaves, and other decorations. Drikpanchang recommends placing Mangalik Kalash, covered with an unpeeled coconut, at the main entrance of the home for auspiciousness.


During Lakshmi Puja, idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are placed on a red cloth, decorated with silk, and adorned with jewelry. A white cloth on a raised platform is used for Navgraha installations. Key puja items (puja samagri) include akshat (rice grains), silver coins, kalash, mango leaves, sweets, fruits, kumkum, incense, diyas, and supari. Diwali 2024: Kali Puja Traditions

Kali Puja, or Shyama Puja, is another important ritual, especially for communities in West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam. Although Diwali and Kali Puja often coincide, Kali Puja may fall a day before Diwali. This year, Kali Puja aligns with Diwali on October 31. For Kali Puja, the night when Amavasya (new moon) prevails at midnight is considered significant, while Lakshmi Puja is observed when Amavasya prevails during the Pradosh period.
