According to a news report, the car left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another car, local police say - pictures from the road show burned grass on the verge. Jota was driving the car from Penafiel when it ran off the road and caught fire. Multiple eyewitnesses reported that the car was engulfed in frames almost immediately, while also spreading to the nearby vegetation.

Who was Andre Silva?
European football is mourning the tragic death of Portuguese international and Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, also a professional footballer. 25-year-old Andre Silva was also a professional footballer who played for FC Penafiel in the Portuguese second tier. He was a part of the FC Porto youth team for 6 years from 2011-17 and from there on out, he had something of a journeyman career. He had a two-year stint at Pacos de Ferreria which was followed by a year-long stint at Famalicio in 2019-20 and then another year in Boavista in 2020-21.
He then spent a further two years at Gondomar, the side he started his youth career at in 2011, before joining Penafiel, the side he was contracted to when he tragically passed away. Andre Silva played as an attacking midfielder, and was seen as a footballer with a promising career in the domestic setup.
He started his career with Gondomar SC's youth setup before joining FC Porto at a similar level. Silva joined Penafiel in 2020 and soon established himself as a regular player in the squad. Andre racked up 102 appearances and scored 17 goals, mostly playing up across the forward line. His contributions this season were key as he scored twice and provided five assists in 32 games, helping his team secure an 11th-place finish in the league.
Andre Silva largely stayed out of the spotlight, overshadowed by Diogo’s more prominent club and international career. Despite the contrast in public attention, the two brothers share a strong, close-knit bond. Jota has frequently posted photos with Andre, whether on vacations or during training sessions, highlighting their close relationship.
