A state funeral for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was held on Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral, bringing together five former presidents: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Among the many moments captured on video, one particular interaction—or lack thereof—has sparked widespread discussion.

In a viral clip, former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, who famously ran against Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, can be seen entering the cathedral alongside a reverend. The Clintons briefly greeted former Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, before taking their seats near former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. However, they did not acknowledge Donald and Melania Trump, who were also in attendance.

The apparent snub has made headlines, with Donald Trump seeming unaware of the incident as he conversed with former President Barack Obama. Meanwhile, Melania Trump, dressed in a striking black peacoat with a bold white collar, sat quietly—a look some compared to a nun’s attire.

This frosty atmosphere at the funeral did not come as a surprise. Trump has long been critical of the Clintons, frequently calling for investigations into Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation. Further complicating matters, Jimmy Carter’s public criticism of Trump on The Colbert Show added another layer of tension.

Similarly, the Pences also appeared to avoid the Trumps during the ceremony, refraining from making eye contact. Former First Lady Michelle Obama was notably absent, but her past comments about political spouses and their roles were cited as relevant context. Michelle has previously stated that she believes spouses should fully align with and support their partners’ endeavors—a view many interpreted as a veiled critique of Melania Trump.
