Coco 2 confirmed: Pixar is revisiting the land of the dead—What we know so far?
Disney has officially announced a sequel to Pixar's 2017 animated hit Coco. CEO Bob Iger revealed the news during a shareholder meeting, confirming that the film is in its early stages. While no release date has been set, initial social media post...

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humour, heart, and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger said.
However, the release date remains uncertain. Pixar initially posted on social media that Coco 2 would hit cinemas in 2029, only to later remove the mention of a specific year. A Disney press release also omitted any timeframe, leaving fans to speculate when they can expect Miguel and his ancestors to return to the big screen.
A Legacy of Music and Family
The original Coco was more than just another Pixar film—it was a cultural phenomenon. The story followed 12-year-old Miguel, a boy with a deep love for music despite his family’s long-standing ban on it. On Día de los Muertos, he embarks on a journey to the Land of the Dead, uncovering long-buried family secrets along the way.Directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina, the film was praised for its heartfelt storytelling, stunning visuals, and respectful portrayal of Mexican culture. It raked in over $800 million worldwide and won two Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the emotionally charged Remember Me.
A Shift Towards Sequels
The Coco 2 announcement comes at a time when Pixar is increasingly focusing on sequels. After a series of pandemic-era releases that went straight to Disney+, the animation powerhouse saw a major box office resurgence with Inside Out 2 in 2024. The film grossed over $1.6 billion globally, temporarily becoming the highest-grossing animated film in history before being surpassed by Ne Zha 2.With Inside Out 2 proving that nostalgia sells, Pixar has doubled down on follow-ups. Toy Story 5 is slated for a 2026 release, Incredibles 3 is in development, and non-Pixar Disney sequels like Moana 2 and Frozen 3 are also in the pipeline.
During an earnings call last year, Iger defended this strategy, saying, “We’re leaning a little bit more into sequels and franchises. Given the environment, and given what it takes to get people out of their homes to see a film, leaning on franchises that are familiar is actually a smart thing.”
The Future of Pixar’s Storytelling
Not all Pixar sequels have been hits. Lightyear, a Toy Story spinoff, underperformed at the box office, proving that not every extension of a beloved brand is a guaranteed success. Meanwhile, original films like Elemental have struggled to match the financial heights of Pixar’s golden era. While audiences eagerly await Coco 2, the question remains: is Pixar’s increasing focus on sequels a sign of creative stagnation, or simply a response to shifting market demands?
