Chelsea sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5 million as transfer ties deepen

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5 million, adding another chapter to an increasingly busy transfer relationship between the two Premier League clubs.

Martinez, 33, has agreed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper arrives after five seasons at Villa, where he established himself as one of the league's leading goalkeepers and made 256 appearances.

The transfer was confirmed as Chelsea and Aston Villa completed their eighth deal with each other in the past four years, according to BBC Sport.

Martinez joins Chelsea after five years at Villa

Martinez moved to Aston Villa in 2020 after leaving Arsenal and quickly became an important figure at the club.

He helped Villa secure the Europa League last season, before deciding to take on a new challenge in west London.

Speaking after completing his move, Martinez said joining Chelsea was an easy decision for both him and his family. He also made clear that his ambitions remain focused on winning trophies.

The goalkeeper's arrival gives Chelsea another experienced option between the posts as the club continues to reshape its squad.

According to BBC Sport, Martinez's transfer comes just days after Nicolas Jackson completed his move in the opposite direction, from Chelsea to Aston Villa.

Chelsea and Villa have become regular transfer partners

The latest deal highlights how unusual the relationship between the two clubs has become.

Since the summer of 2022, when the BlueCo ownership group took control of Chelsea, the clubs have repeatedly exchanged players.

Carney Chukwuemeka was the first major transfer of the new era, moving from Villa to Chelsea for £20 million. Since then, Ian Maatsen, Omari Kellyman and Axel Disasi have also been involved in deals between the clubs.

BBC Sport's figures show that Chelsea have paid Aston Villa £163.5 million for players since 2022.

Villa, meanwhile, have spent £102.5 million on Chelsea players, including Disasi's loan fee. That amount could eventually rise to £150.5 million if the conditions attached to Alejandro Garnacho's loan move are met, according to BBC Sport.

Four Chelsea-Villa deals have arrived this summer

The relationship has accelerated considerably during the current transfer window.

Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea in a deal worth £117 million, while Garnacho joined Villa on loan in a move that contains a conditional obligation to buy worth approximately £43 million.

Jackson then completed a £65 million permanent transfer to Villa.

Martinez's £7.5 million switch to Chelsea is the fourth piece of business between the clubs this summer.

Taken together, the deals have made Chelsea and Villa one of the most active trading partnerships in the Premier League.

Premier League clubs have noticed the transfer pattern

The frequency of the transactions has attracted attention from other clubs, particularly because Chelsea and Villa have both had to operate within domestic and European financial regulations.

However, there is no suggestion that either Chelsea or Aston Villa has breached any rules.

Chelsea's pursuit of Martinez can similarly be viewed as a separate sporting decision. The goalkeeper had reportedly attracted interest from Juventus earlier in the summer, although a finger injury complicated that potential move.

The sequence of deals therefore raises questions because of its frequency, but timing by itself does not demonstrate wrongdoing or an attempt to circumvent financial regulations.

BBC Sport analysed permanent transfers and loans between Premier League clubs since the summer of 2022, focusing on the 15 teams that have remained in the top flight throughout that period.

Chelsea and Aston Villa are tied at the top, with eight deals between them.

Chelsea have also completed eight deals with Brighton, while Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have exchanged players six times. Arsenal and Chelsea have completed five deals over the same period.

Chelsea appear in six of the 10 busiest Premier League club pairings, underlining just how extensively the club has traded players since the BlueCo takeover.

Why Chelsea and Villa keep doing business

There is a personal element to the relationship as well.

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris have developed a close working relationship and have communicated directly over transfer matters, BBC Sport reported.

That connection has continued across multiple transfer windows, including the deal that brought Rogers to Chelsea.

Domestic transfers also make financial sense for Premier League clubs.

English sides generally have considerably greater spending power than clubs in many other European leagues. That means a Premier League team can sometimes be one of the few realistic destinations for an expensive player.

There can also be less uncertainty when recruiting domestically. Clubs already have extensive information about a player's performances, physical demands and ability to adapt to English football.

For Chelsea and Villa, those advantages have combined with an established relationship to produce an extraordinary run of transfers.
