But the famous park is facing a problem that cannot be solved simply by maintaining its lawns and planting more trees.
Climate change is beginning to reshape the conditions under which Central Park's ecosystem survives.
Heavier rainfall is increasing the risk of flooding and soil erosion, while longer periods of extreme heat are putting additional pressure on plants, wildlife and people visiting the park.
At the same time, the 843-acre green space is becoming part of the solution. Central Park can help lower temperatures, absorb rainwater, improve air quality and provide a cooler refuge during dangerous heat.
According to the Central Park Climate Lab, temperatures inside the park can be around 5°C (10°F) lower than on nearby city streets.
That makes Central Park more than a famous urban attraction. It is increasingly being treated as a piece of climate infrastructure in the middle of one of the world's biggest cities.
New York's famous park is facing a very different climate
Central Park was designed in the 19th century, long before climate change became a major concern for city planners.Today, the people responsible for maintaining it have to think about how that historic landscape will cope with conditions that its original designers could never have anticipated.
The Central Park Conservancy, which manages the park, says the challenge has shifted dramatically.
Decades ago, much of the focus was on restoring Central Park after years of deterioration and neglect. Now, the task is to protect that restored landscape from a changing climate.
That means asking difficult questions about which trees and plants will still thrive in New York decades from now.
Some of Central Park's most beautiful trees are already vulnerable
One example can be found in the park's celebrated crabapple alleys.When the trees bloom in spring, their white, pink and purple flowers turn the pathways into one of Central Park's most striking seasonal scenes. The location has even become a popular spot for marriage proposals.
But warmer winters could eventually interfere with that spectacle.
Many trees require a period of cold weather as part of their natural flowering cycle. If winter temperatures remain unusually mild, some varieties may struggle to bloom properly.
An early warm spell can create another problem. Trees such as magnolias and cherry trees may begin flowering prematurely, only to be hit by a late frost.
That can damage blossoms and interfere with pollination.
In a city where temperatures are already higher than in surrounding rural areas, these seasonal changes could become increasingly difficult for some plants to handle.
Central Park is testing plants from warmer climates
Rather than waiting for vulnerable species to disappear, park managers are experimenting with plants that may be better suited to New York's emerging climate.The Conservancy is examining varieties from different climate zones to determine which plants can cope with warmer temperatures and changing weather patterns.
It is a delicate balancing act.
Central Park is not simply an ordinary urban garden where plants can be replaced whenever conditions change. Its landscape is historically significant and recognisable around the world.
The goal is therefore to improve its resilience without turning the park into something that no longer resembles the Central Park people know.
Even fallen leaves are becoming part of the climate strategy
One of the less visible changes is taking place in the northern part of the park, where organic waste is being given a second life.Leaves, weeds and other plant material — along with food waste generated by park operations — are collected and processed into compost.
Instead of being sent away as rubbish, the material is returned to the landscape.
The resulting compost can improve soil quality, support plant growth and help restore areas of grassland that receive heavy use.
It can also play a role in dealing with intense rainfall.
Healthier soil is better able to absorb and retain water, reducing the amount of rainwater that immediately runs across the surface during heavy storms.
The Conservancy plans to increase the capacity of its composting operation, allowing more organic material to remain within the park's natural cycle.
Central Park is also trying to save millions of litres of water
Water management is another major part of the park's climate adaptation plans.New underground infrastructure is being developed to allow water to circulate between bodies of water in the northern section of Central Park.
The idea is relatively simple: reuse water already present in the park instead of repeatedly bringing new potable water into the system.
The infrastructure will largely remain hidden from visitors, but its potential impact on water consumption could be substantial.
As cities face increasingly unpredictable rainfall and periods of drought alongside extreme storms, using water more efficiently is becoming an important part of urban climate planning.
Petrol-powered machines are slowly disappearing
Climate adaptation at Central Park is not limited to trees, soil and water.The machinery used to maintain the landscape is also changing.
The Conservancy is gradually replacing petrol- and diesel-powered equipment with electric alternatives as existing machines reach the end of their useful lives and suitable replacements become available.
The transition includes everything from handheld tools to larger equipment such as mowers, tractors and waste compactors.
Rather than throwing away working machinery simply to make the switch immediately, the park is replacing equipment progressively.
That approach reduces unnecessary waste while allowing newer, lower-emission technologies to be introduced over time.
Why Central Park could become a model for other cities
The changes taking place in Central Park point to a much larger issue.Urban areas around the world are getting hotter, while extreme rainfall and flooding are becoming growing concerns in many regions.
More than half of the world's population already lives in cities, and that share is expected to approach 70 per cent by 2050.
As urban populations expand, green spaces could become increasingly important in protecting people from the effects of climate change.
Trees can provide shade and reduce local temperatures. Vegetation and healthy soil can absorb rainfall. Parks can provide cooler places for people during heatwaves while supporting biodiversity in heavily developed areas.
That makes urban parks more than recreational spaces.
They can function as natural climate infrastructure.
The future of cities may depend on their green spaces
Central Park's experience illustrates a difficult reality of climate adaptation: protecting cities from a warmer world is not always about building something new.Sometimes it means protecting what is already there — and changing how it is managed.
For Central Park, that means choosing plants differently, recycling organic material, conserving water and gradually reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-powered equipment.
The park's future may ultimately depend on how successfully it can balance two competing demands: preserving a landscape created more than 150 years ago while preparing it for a climate that its designers could never have predicted.
What happens in this famous patch of green in the middle of Manhattan could offer a valuable lesson far beyond New York.
As cities around the world confront rising temperatures, heavier rainfall and increasingly unpredictable weather, the parks that once existed mainly as places to escape the city may become something more important — part of the infrastructure that helps cities survive it.
