Canada student grants remain higher for 2026-27

One of the biggest changes for students is actually the continuation of enhanced federal student aid.

From August 1, 2026, full-time students can receive up to $4,200 for an eight-month study period, while part-time students can receive up to $2,520 annually.

Students with disabilities can receive up to $2,800, while the maximum federal student loan remains $300 per week for full-time students. The measures apply through July 31, 2027.

Private for-profit college students face a major change

Most students attending private, for-profit postsecondary institutions will no longer qualify for the Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students.

The Foreign Influence Transparency and Accountability Act establishes a public registry for certain arrangements involving foreign principals and attempts to influence Canadian political or governmental processes.

Civilian police, prosecutors and courts will handle the relevant cases, while the Canadian Armed Forces can still take immediate steps when necessary to protect people, make an arrest or preserve evidence before civilian authorities take over.

Real-time payment rules arrive August 24

The legal framework for the Real-Time Rail takes effect on August 24, 2026. The rules establish requirements around clearing, settlement, security and risk management for participating institutions.

However, consumers should not assume that every Canadian bank account will suddenly offer instant payments on August 24.

Payments Canada expects the consumer-facing rollout during the fourth quarter of 2026, meaning the August date establishes the framework rather than immediately switching on instant transfers for everyone.

Cosmetic labels will list more fragrance allergens

There is also a major change for cosmetics sold in Canada.

Beginning August 1, newly introduced cosmetic products must disclose a much larger list of fragrance allergens. The number of allergens covered expands from 24 to 81.

The disclosure requirements apply when ingredients exceed specified thresholds, including 0.001% for leave-on products and 0.01% for rinse-off products.

Products already on the market before August 1 have additional time to comply, generally until August 1, 2028. For shoppers, this could mean seeing longer ingredient and allergen information on new cosmetic products.

Tobacco products enter a new warning cycle

Canada's tobacco health-warning system is also changing in August.

A new rotation of health warnings and quit-related messages began August 1 for products including cigarettes, little cigars, cigarette tobacco and tubes.

Pet food imported from Mexico faces new certification rules

Pet-food importers have another deadline to watch. The transition period for updated Canadian Food Inspection Agency zoosanitary certificates for certain pet-food imports from Mexico ends August 22.

After that date, affected shipments will need to meet the updated certification requirements. Products covered can include kibble, canned pet food, treats, jerky and certain pet chews.

Reservists get higher education reimbursement

Primary Reserve members also receive an education-related benefit increase.

For academic years beginning on or after August 1, eligible members can receive reimbursement covering 75% of eligible education expenses, up to $7,500 per academic year and $30,000 across all Primary Reserve services.

Eligible expenses can include tuition, enrollment fees, required books, examinations and laboratory fees.

Migratory bird hunting permits move online

Canada's 2026 electronic Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit became available through the federal government's new Regulatory Services Platform on August 1.

Hunters can obtain permits online, download or print them, store them electronically and access previous orders through an online dashboard.

The new system also allows multiple permits to be purchased in one transaction.
