Canada benefit payments in September 2026: Who is getting money, when the payments arrive and why some Canadians will have to wait until October

Thousands of Canadians are set to receive government benefit payments in September, but not everyone will get money on the same day. From families with children and seniors to people with disabilities and eligible Ontario residents, several payments are scheduled to land throughout September 2026.

Here’s a look at who could receive a payment, when it is expected to arrive and what Canadians should know before checking their bank accounts.

The first September payment arrives on September 10

The month gets underway with the Ontario Trillium Benefit, which is scheduled to be paid on September 10. The benefit helps eligible Ontario residents with costs related to sales taxes, energy and property taxes. The amount varies depending on factors such as income, age, housing situation and location.

For some households, this could be the first government payment to arrive in September.

Families have another important date to remember

Parents receiving the Canada Child Benefit should mark September 18 on their calendars. This tax-free monthly payment is available to eligible families raising children under 18. The amount depends largely on household income, the number of children and their ages.


For the 2026–27 payment year, families with lower incomes can receive up to $8,157 a year for each child under six and up to $6,883 a year for each child aged six to 17. That works out to a maximum of about $680 a month for a child under six.

The actual amount can be considerably different from the maximum, depending on a family's circumstances.

People with disabilities could see a payment on September 17

Another payment is scheduled for September 17 for eligible recipients of the federal disability benefit. The program is designed to provide additional financial support to eligible working-age Canadians with disabilities who meet the requirements.

Anyone expecting the payment can check their government account to confirm their eligibility and payment details.

The biggest payment day comes on September 25

September 25 could be one of the busiest benefit-payment days of the month. That's when several major federal and provincial payments are scheduled, including retirement benefits and income support for eligible seniors.

People receiving the Canada Pension Plan can expect their September payment on this date. The same goes for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement for eligible recipients.

The amount varies from person to person. Retirement payments depend on factors such as contribution history, income and the age at which someone started receiving the benefit.

There is another payment for eligible people in Newfoundland and Labrador

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who qualify for the province's disability benefit are also scheduled to receive their payment on September 25. Eligible recipients can receive up to $400 a month, depending on their circumstances.

The program is administered through the Canada Revenue Agency on behalf of the provincial government.

One payment is missing from the September calendar

There is an important catch. If you're waiting for the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, you won't find a September payment date.

The new benefit replaced the former goods and services tax credit, with payments scheduled at different points during the year. After the July payment, the next scheduled payment is October 5, 2026. So, Canadians expecting this particular payment will have to wait until October.

Your payment may not look like someone else's

One thing to remember is that a payment date doesn't mean everyone receives the same amount. Many government benefits are tied to income and personal circumstances. A change in your household income, marital status, number of children or other information can affect what you receive.

Your latest tax return can also play an important role in determining benefit amounts.

What if the money doesn't arrive?

If you're expecting a payment and don't see it immediately, don't panic. Payments sent through direct deposit generally arrive faster, while mailed cheques can take longer.

The federal government advises recipients to allow time for delivery before reporting a missing payment. Checking your online government account is also a useful first step because it can show payment information and whether there has been a change in your eligibility.
