Bonnie Greer dies aged 77: US playwright and author remembered for contribution to British cultural life

U.S.-born playwright, author and cultural commentator Bonnie Greer has died aged 77 after a brief illness, British media reported on Wednesday, September 16. Greer, who had lived in the UK since the mid-1980s, became a familiar face on British television and made a significant contribution to the country's cultural and public life.

Her husband, David Hutchins, announced her death in a statement reported by the BBC. He described Greer as an acclaimed playwright, author, critic and cultural and political commentator whose intelligence, courage and distinctive voice left an enduring mark on British public life.

"To me, she was my partner, confidante and inspiration, and I feel profoundly privileged to have shared my life with her," Hutchins said.


He added that those closest to Greer would remember her for her "warmth, humour, generosity and extraordinary ability to bring people together."

Who was Bonnie Greer?

Born in Chicago in 1948, Bonnie Greer began writing plays at a young age. She studied theatre in her hometown before attending the Actors Studio in New York.

Greer moved to Britain in 1986 and went on to establish herself as a playwright, author, critic and cultural commentator. She also became a regular presence on British television, appearing as a panellist on programmes including Newsnight Review and Question Time.

Her work often explored culture, race and public institutions. The Observer previously described Greer as one of Britain's leading public intellectuals.

Greer was also known for her views on race and identity. In one of her widely cited remarks, she said: "When I wake up in the morning, I'm just myself. It's only when I leave the door that I become a black woman to the world."

Greer's career covered theatre, fiction, memoir and cultural criticism.

Her published works included the memoir A Parallel Life and a critical biography of American poet and playwright Langston Hughes. She also wrote the novels Hanging by Her Teeth, published in 1994, and Entropy, published in 2009.

Her play Munda Negra won the Verity Bargate Award. In 2009, she also published Obama Music, a work combining memoir and music history.

Bonnie Greer's contribution to British culture

Beyond writing and television, Greer served on the boards of several major British cultural institutions, including the British Museum, the Royal Opera House and the London Film School.

She also served as chancellor of Kingston University in London.

Greer's contribution to the arts was recognised when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010 for services to the arts. In 2022, she became a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
