That was the reality facing the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday afternoon. Stripped of their core trio—A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young—the Aces absorbed a heavy 111-71 blowout at the hands of the New York Liberty.

But for head coach Becky Hammon, the lopsided scoreline was a price worth paying to protect her roster's long-term health.

Prioritizing Player Safety Over Standings

Facing the grueling back end of a back-to-back sequence, Hammon made the decisive call to sit her three marquee stars. Her reasoning went far beyond a single regular-season matchup.

"My players' health is the most important," Hammon explained following the loss. "You got to be healthy and fresh as much as possible, obviously, after going through a season. So, the health and safety of players come first. Where we end up, we end up."


With Wilson, Gray, and Young all set to represent their national team at the upcoming FIBA World Cup, the midseason WNBA break won't offer them traditional rest. Hammon recognized that handing them a breather now was essential to preventing burnout down the stretch.

A Travel Timeline Built for Fatigue

The decision to rest the starters became almost mandatory after analyzing the squad's brutal travel itinerary.

Following a grueling battle in Minnesota on Saturday, the team endured a nearly 1,200-mile flight across two time zones, finally checking into their Manhattan hotel around 10:00 p.m. With Sunday’s game scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. EDT national television broadcast on ABC, the Aces were forced to report to the arena less than 12 hours after arriving in the city.

Hammon pointed out the absurdity of the turnaround, noting that even the NBA avoids scheduling cross-country travel with under 22 hours between tip-offs.

Sunday’s loss in Brooklyn brought an end to a wild, high-drama five-game road swing for Las Vegas.

The trip kicked off with a setback in Chicago before the Aces bounced back with a dominant performance against Atlanta. The highlight came in Indiana, where Chelsea Gray delivered miraculous, game-saving 3-pointers at the end of both regulation and overtime to secure a thrilling victory.

With the taxing road trip finally behind them, the Aces return home to Las Vegas for a crucial five-game home stand, rested stars in tow and their bigger championship picture firmly intact.
