An Amber Alert was issued for Diana on September 6 when the investigators acquired surveillance footage depicting her with Perez in the Salinas area

A 14-year-old girl from California, who was the focus of an Amber Alert, has been located safely in Mexico, while her father has been arrested several months after a newborn believed to be the child of the teenager was found dead on a roadside.

Diana Galvez Ortega was rescued by Mexican police, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said, and her 38-year-old father, Sergio Galvez Perez, was arrested as well during the operation. At the time of his arrest, authorities stated that Perez was found to be in possession of narcotics.

The case was started when a newborn, known by the authorities as "Baby Angelita," was discovered dead on the side of a road in north Monterey County, California, on August 1, and it was later claimed that Diana had given birth to the baby with Perez being suspected of being the infant's father.

What has become of the teenager who was the subject of the Amber Alert?

An Amber Alert was issued for Diana on September 6 when the investigators acquired surveillance footage depicting her with Perez in the Salinas area. The two had last been seen in a white Nissan Altima which did not have number plates on August 4.

At the time, the investigators stated that Perez was allegedly hiding Diana and stopping the authorities from finding her. Meanwhile, the police were searching for him because of allegations concerning the sexual abuse of his daughter.

The search went on for weeks before the Mexican authorities found the two of them. According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, Diana is now safe and has been placed in the care of the local authorities in Mexico.

Father faces multiple charges

Perez is facing a number of charges in Monterey County, such as incest, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment and child endangerment.

It has been stated that Perez is suspected of having sexually abused and impregnated Diana; the sheriff's office had earlier requested his arrest as part of the inquiry into the teenager and the baby's death.

Tina Nieto, the sheriff, stated that Perez's arrest in Mexico took place during the operation to rescue Diana. Mexican authorities have also been informed of the pending charges against Perez in Monterey County.

The babies was later known as "Baby Angelita" and it was believed that Diana was the mother. Perez was regarded as the suspected father. The circumstances relating to the newborn's death are still the subject of investigation.

What led to Diana being looked for in the case at first?

At first there was confusion regarding Diana's legal status; although a murder warrant had been obtained with respect to the teenager, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni subsequently made it clear that her office had not approved bringing murder charges against Diana.

She stated that the warrant was a Ramey warrant, a type that can be acquired by requesting it from the court without the need for prior approval from the district attorney's office. She stressed that Diana is regarded as a victim of the abuse that her father is alleged to have committed.

The office of the District Attorney has stated that its top concern is for Diana's safety and making sure that she gets the proper support and services.

Investigation remains ongoing

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office stated that the investigation is still ongoing and that a press conference will take place to give further information.

Diana is still in Mexico with the supervision of the local authorities, while Perez is dealing with the California charges that are pending. The authorities have not made public the exact place in Mexico where the two were found.
