A small town in the far northwest corner of Washington state is bearing the brunt of an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada. Tensions have reached new heights, fueled by former President Donald Trump’s tariff threats, prompting Canada’s retaliatory measures. Once close allies, the two nations now find themselves at odds.

Point Roberts, a tiny exclave, has just one grocery store and three restaurants. Surrounded by water on three sides, its only land route connects to Canada. To reach mainland Washington, residents must drive 25 miles north to Vancouver, cross the border, and then re-enter the US.

Established in 1846, when the US-Canada border was drawn, Point Roberts is facing one of its worst economic crises despite its picturesque beaches, marina, and hiking trails. Canadian visitors are staying away, and some American residents report rising hostility over their nationality.

According to an Associated Press report, most property owners in Point Roberts are Canadian, and many of its 1,000 year-round residents hold dual citizenship. Once a thriving fishing town, its economy now depends on tourism and retail. But with tourist numbers plunging, businesses are struggling.

Larry Musselwhite, owner of Larry’s Liquor Locker, blames Trump for the downturn. His store’s sales dropped 40% last month, forcing him to put retirement plans on hold.

In the 2024 election, 75% of Point Roberts residents voted against Trump, a higher percentage than the rest of Whatcom County or Washington state. Yet, they are still suffering from the consequences of his policies.

Adding to the uncertainty, the tariffs have been erratic, changing without notice and creating confusion at border crossings. Some fear the situation could escalate if Canada retaliates by cutting off water and electricity supplies to Point Roberts.

Local leaders have turned to Washington state and British Columbia officials for help, but progress has been slow, AP reported.
