The first lady is joining IndyCar and Fox Corporation to announce new scholarship opportunities for young adults leaving the foster care system. The initiative is expected to be unveiled at the White House alongside President Donald Trump ahead of the Washington, DC, Grand Prix weekend, according to a CNN report.
The appearance comes after weeks away from public view and offers another glimpse into how Melania Trump is shaping her role during her husband's second term — with fewer ceremonial appearances but a more concentrated focus on specific policy initiatives.
A rare appearance after weeks out of public view
Melania Trump has maintained a notably lower public profile than many recent first ladies. Her upcoming White House appearance will be her first major public outing since the FIFA World Cup on July 19, according to CNN.In recent weeks, she has been absent from several high-profile events, including the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham, the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner and a dignified transfer for US service members killed during the Iran war.
Much of that time has reportedly been spent away from Washington, including at the Trump family's Bedminster golf club in New Jersey, while construction work continues around the White House.
But the lower profile does not appear to mean a reduced role behind the scenes. CNN reported that the first lady and her small team have been increasingly focused on policy work, particularly through her Fostering the Future initiative.
From Formula 1 races to the foster care initiative
Melania Trump's connection with motorsport dates back to her childhood in Europe, where she attended Formula 1 races with her father. The new partnership gives her an opportunity to connect that personal interest with an issue that has become central to her work as first lady: supporting foster youth as they age out of the system.
The United States has roughly 400,000 children and young people living in foster care, according to the US Department of Education. CNN also cited National Youth in Transition Database figures showing that homelessness is a major challenge for many young people after they leave foster care.
Melania Trump began supporting foster youth after Donald Trump's first term, launching scholarship programmes in 2021. Since returning to the White House, she has pushed for a broader policy agenda focused on education, housing, savings and support for young people leaving foster care, CNN reported.
Fostering the Future becomes Melania Trump's main policy focus
The first lady's foster care work has expanded considerably during Trump's second administration.Among the initiatives linked to her advocacy is an executive order aimed at improving outcomes for children and families, along with efforts to improve child welfare data and address barriers affecting young people in foster care.
Her office has also promoted savings accounts for children in foster care and secured a $25 million investment in the administration's 2026 budget for housing and other support for young people transitioning out of the system, according to CNN and the White House.
Melania Trump has also appealed directly to lawmakers as her team works with Congress on possible changes to programmes covering housing, education and job training for foster youth. Some of that legislation, however, remains stalled.
A smaller team with a bigger policy ambition
One notable difference from Melania Trump's first stint as first lady is the structure of her office.CNN reported that her current team is significantly smaller, with a staff of seven, compared with more than a dozen during her husband's first administration. Yet sources told the network that the office is taking a more focused approach and placing greater emphasis on building a lasting policy record.
Her previous Be Best campaign covered several issues involving children and online behaviour but struggled to establish a clear long-term impact.
This time, her office has concentrated much more heavily on foster youth. The hiring of policy director Sarah Gesiriech, who has experience in child welfare and previously worked with figures including former first lady Laura Bush and Sen. Chuck Grassley, has also been noticed by advocates in the sector, CNN reported.
Praise for the advocacy — but questions remain
Melania Trump's efforts have received support from some child welfare advocates, who say her involvement has helped bring greater national attention to the challenges facing foster youth.CNN reported that her advocacy has helped accelerate interest in policies such as kin licensure, which makes it easier for relatives and family members to become licensed foster parents.
However, some advocates have also raised concerns about whether other policies pursued by the Trump administration could work against the goals of improving outcomes for vulnerable children and families.
Chantal Hinds of the Children's Defense Fund of New York told CNN that while increased national attention on foster youth was welcome, changes involving safety net programmes, Medicaid and other policies could create additional pressures for families.
The first lady's office did not say whether Melania Trump has raised those concerns privately with the president, CNN reported.
Melania Trump charts a different path as first lady
Thursday's announcement is expected to underline the unusual balance Melania Trump has struck during her second term as first lady. She has largely stayed away from the constant public schedule traditionally associated with the role. At the same time, her office has quietly built a more specialised policy operation around a smaller number of issues.
The IndyCar partnership and new foster youth scholarships bring that approach into public view — and give Melania Trump one of her most visible moments in months.
For a first lady who has often chosen to work outside the daily political spotlight, the event may offer a clearer picture of the legacy she is now trying to build: one centred less on frequent appearances and more on a sustained focus on young people leaving foster care. According to CNN, her team is increasingly focused on turning that work into a lasting part of her record as first lady.
