A decade after his fateful fight with Terrel Williams, former boxer Prichard Colón dies at 33

The sports world is mourning the loss of former professional boxer Prichard Colón, who passed away on August 13, 2026, at the age of 33.

His father, Richard Colón, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a social media message, marking the end of a long and courageous battle following catastrophic injuries sustained inside the ring over ten years ago.

Colón’s story remains one of the most poignant narratives in modern combat sports—a rising star whose promising career was tragically cut short, sparking widespread reforms around safety, referee enforcement, and fighter protection in professional boxing.

The fateful 2015 bout in Fairfax

On October 17, 2015, the undefeated 23-year-old Puerto Rican prospect stepped into the ring at the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia, to face Terrel Williams.

Holding a 16-0 record with 13 knockouts, Colón was widely viewed as a future world champion in the super welterweight division.

During the hard-fought contest, Colón was repeatedly struck in the back of the head—an illegal strike known as a "rabbit punch." Despite alerting the referee to the fouls, the action continued.

Between rounds, Colón complained of severe nausea and dizziness to the ringside physician, but he was cleared to keep fighting.

In the ninth round, after suffering a knockdown and growing visibly disoriented, Colón’s corner mistakenly removed his gloves, resulting in a disqualification. Moments later in the dressing room, Colón collapsed, vomited, and lost consciousness.

Long road to recovery

Rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital, surgeons discovered a severe left-sided subdural hematoma measuring 1.5 centimeters with significant midline shift. Doctors performed an emergency hemicraniectomy to relieve swelling on his brain and evacuate the blood clot.

Colón spent 221 days in a coma.

Though he eventually regained consciousness, the catastrophic brain damage left him in a persistent vegetative state. Transferred to his mother’s home in Orlando, Florida, Colón received around-the-clock care from his family, led by his mother, Nieves, and his father.

Over the years, through intensive rehabilitation, he gradually learned to respond to basic verbal commands and communicate using specialized eye-tracking computer software.

A lasting legacy

Colón’s injury fundamentally altered the sport of professional boxing. In response to the tragedy, sanctioning bodies reassessed how fouls—specifically hits to the back of the head—were penalized.

The World Boxing Council introduced a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding rabbit punches, officially dubbed the "Prichard Colón Rule." Under these regulations, referees are required to explicitly warn fighters and trainers during pre-fight locker room instructions about the grave dangers of punches to the base of the skull.

Referees must immediately halt action upon the first occurrence of a punch behind the head to issue a formal warning. Subsequent infractions carry mandatory point deductions or immediate disqualification.

News of Colón's passing brought an outpouring of tributes from across the international boxing community, with major sanctioning bodies celebrating his legacy both inside and outside the ring.

The WBC and WBA issued similar tributes, recognizing Colón as an honorary champion whose story left an indelible mark on the sporting world.
