2026 Super El Nino forecast: Is a powerful climate event expected? Here's what experts say

What is El Nino?

El Nino is one phase of the El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a naturally occurring climate cycle that typically develops every two to seven years.


During an El Nino event, sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific become warmer than normal. These warmer waters alter atmospheric circulation, changing rainfall, temperatures and storm patterns across many parts of the world.

The opposite phase, La Niña, brings cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures, while the neutral phase represents near-average ocean conditions.

What is a super El Nino?

A super El Nino refers to an exceptionally strong El Nino event.

An El Nino is declared when sea surface temperatures remain at least 0.5°C above average for several months. When those temperatures exceed 2°C above average, the event is generally classified as a very strong or super El Nino.

Jessica Wan, a climate scientist at the University of Chicago, told Science News Explores that many scientific and technological questions remain unanswered before such an approach could ever be considered.

Climate scientist Daniele Visioni also told the publication that the findings are "really interesting and very new", adding that they provide "a really good indication that it is something worth thinking about."
