Tanks, troops and Trump: DC gears up for massive Army’s 250th birthday parade on June 14
Fresh off the cleanup from World Pride celebrations, Washington, DC is now bracing for a markedly different event: a massive military parade on Saturday to mark the U.S. Army's 250th birthday—and President Donald Trump's 79th.

According to reports, there will be more than 18 miles of anti-scale fencing and the deployment of multiple drones, despite the city’s usual drone no-fly status.

Army officials expect around 200,000 attendees, but authorities are preparing for “hundreds of thousands”, according to an AP report.

“We’ve got a ton of magnetometers,” Matt McCool of the Secret Service's Washington Field office told AP. “If a million people show up, we’re going to have some lines.”

A total of 175 magnetometers will be stationed at security checkpoints for both the daytime birthday festivities and the evening parade. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith warned of “major traffic impacts” and encouraged attendees to use Metro instead of driving.

“This is a significant event with a large footprint,” she said. “We’re counting on the public to be an extra set of eyes and ears.”

The parade has been designated a National Special Security Event—a classification reserved for high-profile gatherings like presidential inaugurations or state funerals. That designation requires coordinated efforts among the Secret Service, FBI, Capitol Police, DC officials, and the National Guard.

While the Army birthday celebration had been planned for months, Trump announced this spring that he would transform the event—coinciding with his own birthday—into a grand military spectacle featuring 60-ton M1 Abrams tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through city streets.

Counter-protests are expected, with the largest being the “No Kings” march to the White House. Authorities are also monitoring the immigration-related unrest in Los Angeles, concerned that similar clashes could erupt in DC.

“We’re paying close attention to what’s happening there,” McCool said. “We have a robust plan in place for civil disobedience.”

FBI Agent Phillip Bates, who oversees counterterrorism and crisis management in the capital, confirmed that there are currently “no credible threats” to the event.

Lindsey Appiah, DC’s deputy mayor for public safety, said the city had detailed plans for the Army celebration long before Trump’s involvement. However, once the parade expanded, “those plans got a lot bigger on short notice.”

Still, she emphasized, DC is well-practiced at adapting to rapid changes. “We’ve become very flexible, very nimble.”
