12 days to go: Oracle employees may be staring at another '6 am layoff notice' on September 1
Oracle is allegedly gearing up for a new phase of job cuts, with managers instructed to pinpoint roles for elimination by September 1. This move comes on the heels of sizable workforce reductions and substantial investments in artificial intellige...

Oracle has already cut about 21,000 jobs during its current fiscal year, reducing its workforce from roughly 162,000 to about 141,000 employees. The reported new cuts would come as the company continues to pour billions of dollars into artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
Oracle spent about $55.7 billion on infrastructure in FY2026 and raised roughly $43 billion through debt as it expands its AI infrastructure business. At the same time, its cloud infrastructure revenue has been growing rapidly.
Why September 1 matters
The date is not simply another deadline. It marks the start of Oracle's new fiscal quarter, making the reported workforce reductions part of a broader effort to control costs while the company aggressively invests in AI.
With September 1 approaching, attention is now shifting to which teams could be affected, how deep the cuts could be and whether Oracle's AI expansion will continue to reshape the company's workforce.
Note that Oracle has not publicly confirmed the reported September 1 layoffs.
According to reports from Business Insider, managers at the company have reportedly been asked to provide lists of employees who could be affected. Some teams could see cuts reaching double-digit percentages.
Why a '6 am' notice?
During the earlier round, thousands of Oracle workers reportedly received emails at around 6 am local time. In some cases, employees said there was no prior HR call or warning from their managers. Instead, an email from “Oracle Leadership” reportedly contained a blunt message: “we have made the decision to eliminate your role.” System access was also reportedly cut the same morning.
More than 10,000 Oracle employees received similar 6 am layoff notices during the March cuts. The reported layoffs would come after a huge reduction in Oracle's workforce. Oracle's headcount fell by approximately 21,000 employees, or 13%, during the fiscal year that ended May 31. Its workforce dropped from around 162,000 employees to approximately 141,000. The company also recorded $1.8 billion in restructuring costs, up sharply from $374 million a year earlier.
Oracle has linked some of its workforce reductions to the growing adoption of artificial intelligence. In its annual filing, the company said AI adoption across its operations had already resulted in workforce reductions and could continue to do so. The layoffs are taking place against the backdrop of Oracle's massive AI spending. The company spent approximately $55.7 billion on infrastructure during the last fiscal year as it works to expand its data-centre and cloud capacity.
What makes the potential job cuts particularly striking is that Oracle's business is not simply shrinking. Revenue increased 17% in the last fiscal year, while its cloud infrastructure business grew by 77%. Net income also jumped 95% to $6.13 billion in a recent quarter. CEO Clay Magouyrk has pointed to approximately $553 billion in remaining performance obligations, arguing that demand for AI computing is outpacing supply. Yet Oracle shares are down about 26% this year, with concerns about debt and the broader software industry's exposure to AI weighing on the stock.
