Germany vows to defend Airbus sites

Germany’s economy minister pledged Wednesday that his government will do all it can to protect Airbus sites in the country and ensure that the burdens of a restructuring drive are divided fairly.

BERLIN: Germany’s economy minister pledged Wednesday that his government will do all it can to protect Airbus sites in the country and ensure that the burdens of a restructuring drive are divided fairly.

Airbus parent EADS’ announcement of a further delay to the flagship A380 superjumbo and a cost-cutting drive was followed by concerns in Germany that production work could be moved to France, putting jobs at risk. Economy minister Michael Glos said the German government “will work with all its strength for the German sites.”

“We will watch out so that the possible burdens are distributed fairly,” he added in a statement, noting that European Aeronautic Defence and Space executives had assured him of that. Mr Glos said he would discuss the situation at Airbus with his French counterpart when German and French ministers meet in Paris on Thursday.

“I expect company management now to decide quickly what steps are necessary to overcome the difficult situation at Airbus, and involve employees appropriately in this,” the minister said. Mr Glos met last week with EADS’ German co-CEO, Tom Enders.

Mr Enders’ French colleague, Louis Gallois — now also the CEO of Airbus — will visit the company’s Hamburg plant, its biggest in Germany, on Thursday, Airbus spokesman Tore Prang said.
