GE Transportation celebrates locomotive to China

GE Transportation is celebrating the shipment of the first of 300 locomotives it has built for the Chinese government.

ERIE: GE Transportation is celebrating the shipment of the first of 300 locomotives it has built for the Chinese government.

The Erie-based manufacturer, which is part of giant General Electric Co., says the locomotive has been loaded onto a ship to the Port of Philadelphia. The Chinese placed the $450 million order in 2005.

The locomotive is one of two that will be shipped wholly assembled. The rest of the locomotives will be shipped as kits and assembled with the Chinese supplying parts and labor to assemble them.

The locomotives are more than 6,000 horsepower and designed to reduce fuel costs and emissions.
