Fuji to challenge GE in mammography equipment
Fuji Photo Film is challenging General Electric's dominance of the US market for digital breast-cancer detectors after it received permission to sell a device that is cheaper than GE's equipment.
The company expects to ship over 7,000 units of its system, used to detect breast cancer, by March 2010, Hisatoyo Kato, the head of Fuji Photo's medical systems business, said. The Tokyo-based company has sold 3,000 units, which cost about $300,000 each, worldwide since 2003.
``Our device costs about a third'' of General Electric's equipment because it doesn't require a total system replacement, said Kato. The price differential ``makes it easier for medical institutions to install'' the device, which received US Food and Drug Administration approval.
Fuji Photo is seeking to increase sales from medical equipment as earnings from traditional film camera business slow. The company expects to ship 500 units a year to the US, where one out of eight women get breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
