France, Spain nervous on Airbus jobs, recast plans

MADRID/PARIS: France and Spain expressed anxieties about restructuring plans at troubled planemaker Airbus on Wednesday, amid speculation of thousands of job cuts following delays to the A380 superjumbo.
A source close to French president Jacques Chirac said on the eve of a Franco-German summit that France wanted Germany to help to solve the crisis.
Power has traditionally been shared between French and German interests in EADS since its creation seven years ago. Spain was, until recently, seen as a secondary player with no board votes and little direct influence over strategy.
However France has paid more attention to the Spanish shareholding since Russia unexpectedly grabbed a 5% stake in EADS via a state bank and hinted it could buy more. A French official said Paris was in talks with Madrid on the issue.
The official, who is close to Chirac, said the French leader was closely following the progress of Airbus restructuring. He declined to comment on reports that the German state would buy part of DaimlerChrysler’s holding in EADS.
