Former WSJ top editor heads to Washington Post
Marcus Brauchli, who left a top editorial job at the Wall Street Journal in April, was named executive editor of The Washington Post newspaper.
The appointment is effective September 8, the Post said yesterday. Brauchli succeeds Leonard Downie, who announced his retirement on June 23.
"Brauchli will oversee the editorial operations of both The Washington Post newspaper and washingtonpost.com," the Washington Post Co said in a statement.
"Marcus brings a tremendous wealth of experience, both as a journalist and as an editor, that will help us navigate the new world of media -- honouring and building on the standards of journalism blazed by Ben Bradlee and Len Downie -- and move us forward to a new and bright future," publisher Katharine Weymouth said.
"Marcus has the ability to think strategically about our newsroom, about how to realign our resources in a way that is consistent with what readers want and expect and maintain The Post's first-rate journalism."
Brauchli quit the post of managing editor at the business daily four months after a takeover of by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. He had been on the job since April 2007.
Before becoming the Journal's managing editor, Brauchli was a deputy managing editor and national editor at the business daily.
Brauchli's career at Dow Jones began in 1984, when he joined the company as a national copyreader for AP-Dow Jones News Services.
