Five members to join super-panel
As per the terms of the agreement between Dow Jones and Rupert Murdoch’s news Corp, a five member panel has been set up, which will have the powers to hire and fire top editors.
The panel includes Louis Boccardi, former chief of Associated Press; Jack Fuller, former president of Tribune Co’s publishing arm; former Republican member Jennifer Dunn; Thomas Bray, a conservative editorialist; and MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte.
The first four names were proposed by the Bancrofts and Dow Jones, while Negroponte’s name was proposed by New Corp. The five members will get $100,000 a year and will meet at least four times ever year. In an effort to win Bancrofts’ support for the mega-acquisition, News Corp had agreed to set up the editorial panel.
The panel will have the authority to intervene if any of the designated editorial professionals were threatened with dismissal or a change in duties. The editors covered by this panel include the top news editor of the Journal, the top opinion editor of the Journal and the head of Dow Jones Newswires.
From the first day of Murdoch’s bid for the Journal, there were fears that the media mogul may use the paper to pursue his commercial interests.
