Fiat chairman says Opel takeover 'a lottery': Report

Fiat chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said on Wednesday the takeover of Germany's Opel from US auto giant General Motors was "a lottery," adding that Fiat had "done everything possible" to win the bid.

MILAN: Fiat chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said on Wednesday the takeover of Germany's Opel from US auto giant General Motors was "a lottery," adding that Fiat had "done everything possible" to win the bid.

"We have done what we had to do and so we have the feeling that we have done everything possible," the Fiat chairman said, Italian news agencies reported.

"In a lottery, it's best to wait for the result," he said, adding that a merger between Fiat and Opel would be "an extraordinary opportunity."

The German government is set to choose Wednesday its preferred bidder for Opel between Fiat, Canadian auto parts maker Magna International and Brussels-based investment group RHJ International.

The Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation has also expressed an interest.
