Fewer Japanese tourists expected for Hawaii

Hawaii's tourism officials expect a 10 percent drop in Japanese holiday travelers to the islands.

HONOLULU: Hawaii's tourism officials expect a 10 percent drop in Japanese holiday travelers to the islands.

One positive factor will be the stronger yen, but the Japanese holidays are more scattered than usual this year. Fewer Japanese travelers will be able to take long trips.

The Hawaii tourism industry already is suffering from closure of Aloha and ATA airlines.

Japanese travelers spend nearly $100 more per day than visitors from other U.S. states.

Merchants say the stronger yen makes everything in Hawaii a bargain for the Japanese.

The yen has increased about 13 percent against the dollar over the past year.
