EU pledges $780 mn aid to Afghanistan

The European Union (EU) has pledged 610 mn euros (about $780 mn) in aid to Afghanistan to help rebuild the war-torn country, Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta said Sunday.

KABUL: The European Union (EU) has pledged 610 mn euros (about $780 mn) in aid to Afghanistan to help rebuild the war-torn country, Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta said Sunday.

"The European Union pledged a new contribution of 610 million euros to Afghanistan and this assistance would be disbursed by 2013," he told reporters after returning home from a Europe tour.

The minister added said that the EU had agreed to channelise 60 percent of the amount through the Afghanistan government.

He said the EU would finance projects in the agriculture, energy and railway sectors in the country.
