STOCKHOLM: Swedish telecommunications equipment provider Ericsson said on Thursday that it had signed a contract to set up and operate an international mobile phone network for British group Cable&Wireless.

Ericsson declined to state the size of the contract beyond saying that it was big. Ericsson, the biggest provider of telecom networks in the world, said it would manage the C&W mobile phone network for five years.

The network, based on the GSM standard mobile communications system, would cover Europe, Asia and the United States and would enable fixed-line and mobile communications to be carried through one handset.
