LONDON: French energy giant EDF and Centrica are to buy British Energy for more than 12 billion pounds (15.2 billion euros, 23.9 billion dollars), while an official announcement was likely early next week, the BBC said on Thursday.

"We hope it will be done in the next few days," an executive close to the companies was quoted as saying on the BBC's news website.

British Energy is a third-owned by Britain's Labour government, which wants to sell its interest. Centrica owns British Gas, Britain's largest supplier of gas to homes.
