Disney to test toys independently

NEW YORK : Walt Disney will start its own testing of toys featuring Disney characters following recalls of Mattel toys found to have unsafe levels of lead paint, the New York Times reported on its online edition on Monday.

Disney executives intend to inform Mattel and other toy makers on Monday, the report said. The process will include random testing of products already on store shelves, the report said.

“It sends the message that we are looking over their shoulders,” Andy Mooney, the chairman of Disney’s consumer products division, told the paper. Also, starting this week, engineers hired by privately held Toys “R” Us will regularly visit the company's stores to take branded toys to independent labs for testing.

“I have to be able to put my head on the pillow and say ‘I’ve done everything I can,’” Ron Boire, president of Toys “R” Us, told the paper. Spokespeople for Disney and Toys “R” Us could not immediately be reached for comment.
