BERLIN: German rail operator Deutsche Bahn plans to cut 14,000 jobs over the next five years, the Tagesspiegel newspaper said in a report to be published on Monday.

Deutsche Bahn currently employs 240,000 people. It has 182,000 in Germany.

The newspaper, quoting an unnamed member of the group's supervisory board, said the economic crisis made the job cuts necessary.

The same source told the daily there would be no forced redundancies before the end of next year. A Deutsche Bahn spokesman declined to comment when contacted by the Tagesspiegel.
