Dell cuts 1,100 jobs in Ottawa

American computer manufacturer Dell announced on Wednesday it is closing its Ottawa call centre and cutting or relocating 1,100 jobs as part of a company-wide restructuring.

OTTAWA: American computer manufacturer Dell announced on Wednesday it is closing its Ottawa call centre and cutting or relocating 1,100 jobs as part of a company-wide restructuring.

"The decision to close Dell Ottawa was a very difficult one," said Michael Jaillet, head of Dell's local operations. "We will do all we can to help our employees and our community partners through this transition."

Dell's Canadian customer support will be consolidated across 25 existing Dell locations worldwide, the company said in a statement.

And affected employees will be offered jobs elsewhere within the company or severance packages.

Last month, Dell announced a plan to cut costs by three billion dollars per year from 2009-2011, with plant closures at its Austin, Texas headquarters and the eventual sale of its financial services division.
