Contract workers demo in front of Neyveli Lignite Corporation office
A large number of contract labourers staged a demonstration in front of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation office in protest against union leaders reportedly not being allowed to attend a meeting.
Besides seeking regularisation of services, their other demands are provision of housing and medical facilities, transport allowances and bonus.
The meeting, in which 13 trade union leaders participated, was convened by NLC director (personnel) Babu Rao. however the aituc union leaders were reportedly not allowed to take part, following which the workers staged the demonstration.
Police rushed to the spot and managed to disperse them. AITUC president Kuppuswamy later told reporters that the NLC management had not intimated them of the talks.
Meanwhile, NLC public relations officer Sridhar said power generation in all three thermal power stations today was 2450 MW, of the total capacity of 2490 MW.
Police pickets have been posted in the thermal stations and lignite mines as a precautionary measure.
