Congress backs Patil on Afzal remark
A day after Home Minister Shivraj Patil stirred the hornet's nest by drawing a parallel between the case of Afzal Guru, the Parliament attack mastermind on death row, and that of ndian national Sarabjit Singh's in Pakistan, the Congress party endo...
"If anything has been stated by the honourable Home Minister, how can you expect that another Cabinet colleague will differ from him on the whole issue?" asked Cabinet Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi.
"If you are asking for Afzal's hanging then how can you ask pardon for Sarabjit? What are you doing?" Patil had asked rhetorically.
BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar pointed out that the Home Minister had neglected to remember the crucial divergences between the cases.
"Home Minister must know that the Sarabjit case is one of mistaken identity and we are not defending the terrorist. Afzal Guru is a proven case of terrorism," he said.
Despite the BJP's objections, the Congress, as Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi asserts, is standing firmly behind Patil.
