'Coca-cola's Kent surprised by market woes'

WASHINGTON: Coca-Cola president Muhtar Kent said he was unpleasantly surprised by the problems the soft-drink maker faced in North America, the Atlanta journal-constitution reported, citing an interview.

Kent said the Atlanta-based company's marketing and displays look much better in countries such as Greece, turkey or India than in the us and Canada, the newspaper said.

The president also pointed to signs that support the impulse consumption that is 70, 80 per cent of the brand, the newspaper said.

Both Kent and chief executive officer Neville Isdell said that growing concern about obesity and artificial sweeteners in the US weren't driving the decline in soft-drink sales, but rather pricing, the newspaper said.

Isdell told the journal-constitution that the company expects one per cent to two per cent growth in the North American market, which will be a very profitable part of coca-cola's business.
