Cisco ropes in former Motorola CTO Padmasree Warrior

Cisco Systems Inc has snapped up Motorola Inc's former chief technology officer, adding valuable experience in mobile communications.

SAN FRANCISCO: Cisco Systems Inc has roped in Motorola Inc's former chief technology officer, adding valuable experience in mobile communications to the ranks of the world's largest Internet networking supplier.

The appointment of Padmasree Warrior, announced late Tuesday, highlights San Jose-based Cisco's intensifying efforts to find inventive ways to deliver as much bandwidth-intensive multimedia content to as many different types of electronic devices as possible.

Warrior said in an interview Tuesday that her talks with Cisco began before her departure from Motorola. She said she is excited about finding ways Cisco can benefit from video mobility - or moving video among different networks and kinds of devices - and the rise of social networking Web sites.

Cisco makes routers and switches that direct Internet traffic. The company is profiting handsomely from Internet service providers' infrastructure upgrades to handle the growing amount of voice, video and data traffic flowing across their networks and increasingly to mobile devices such as laptops and cell phones.

Warrior's resignation from Schaumburg, Ill-based Motorola, made public on Monday, came amid a big management shakeup at the world's third-largest cell phone handset maker. Chief Executive Ed Zander's departure was announced last week.

Warrior will fill a position at Cisco that has been vacant since 2005. The chief technology officer slot was filled most recently by Charles Giancarlo, now Cisco's chief development officer and often named as a potential successor to Chief Executive John Chambers.

Already the worldwide leader in selling Internet infrastructure, Cisco is aggressively trying to cement itself as a key player in technologies that allow people to collaborate on projects and play together over the Internet.

"If I look at the future and areas I think where the industry's going to evolve, Cisco's a company that can lead the industry," Warrior said.
