Chinese telecom co to invest more in R&D in India

Chinese telecom operator Huawei Technologies Co is mulling a long-term strategy for research and development in India and will continue to invest in a big way for its existing R&D facility in Bangalore.

SHENZHEN (CHINA): Chinese telecom operator Huawei Technologies Co is mulling a long-term strategy for research and development in India and will continue to invest in a big way for its existing R&D facility in Bangalore.

The company is exploring new areas to spread its research and development activities, said Huawei Senior Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer Eric Xu (Zhijun).

"We will continue to invest for the expansion our Bangalore facility," Eric told media at the company's corporate headquarters in the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen.

Having already made investments to the tune of $200 million, the firm plans to spend another $100 million.

The Bangalore unit, which currently has strength of 1,300 employees, is expected to recruit 700 more people in the next two years.

The company also has R&D facilities in the USA, Germany, Sweden and Russia besides China. Ten per cent of its revenue is invested in research and development.

On manufacturing plans of networking equipment in India, Eric said: "Indian telecom industry is a rapidly growing market and our decision on manufacturing will be based on the growth and the opportunity the Indian telecom market will offer," he said, adding Huawei has no current plans for setting up manufacturing terminals in India.

According to Eric, Huawei's "good cooperation with Vodafone in European markets" might help it in India.

"We supply network equipment and UMTS handsets to Vodafone and going by this strageic relationship, we plan to carry this association to the Indian market too, Eric said.

"And to achieve this, we will make all efforts to grab the oportunities," he said.
