Chinese shoppers spend $88 bn during week-long holiday

The figures highlight the strength of the Chinese economy, which has overtaken Japan to become the world's second largest.

BEIJING: Chinese shoppers splashed out during the week-long National Day holiday, spending more than 88 billion dollars on clothes, electronic gadgets and restaurant meals, state media said Thursday.

Retail and catering sales reached 592.5 billion yuan between October 1 and 7, up 18.7 percent from the same period last year, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the commerce ministry.

The figures highlight the strength of the Chinese economy, which has overtaken Japan to become the world's second largest.
