China's Hu wants lessons learned from toxic milk scandal

BEIJING: Chinese President Hu Jintao said lessons must be learned from the toxic milk scandal that has embarrassed the nation, urging companies to ensure their products are safe, state media reported on Wednesday.

Hu made his call during a tour of dairy companies in eastern China's Anhui province on Tuesday, on the eve of China's October 1 National Day.

"Food safety is directly linked to the well-being of the broad masses and the competence of a company," Hu said."Chinese companies should learn from the lessons of the Sanlu tainted milk powder incident," he added, referring to Sanlu Group, whose toxic baby formula was at the origin of China's food safety crisis.

Hu urged companies to strengthen management and food safety checks and make sure their products were safe for consumers. Since the Sanlu scandal first erupted last month, an increasing number of dairy products have been found to contain the industrial chemical melamine.

Melamine, which has sickened 53,000 children and killed four, is normally used for making plastic, but when added to watered-down milk it makes it look richer in protein than is actually the case.
