BEIJING: Chinese President Hu Jintao left on Monday for a seven-day state visit to Australia that will include attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit, state media said.

Hu will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Commerce Minister Bo Xilai and other top Chinese officials, a news agency said.

Hu will meet Australian Prime Minister John Howard during the trip, which will see the two sides sign a series of trade, energy, and mineral resource deals, according to a Chinese daily.

A senior Asian diplomat told AFP in Sydney that China is expected to clash with western nations over a statement on climate change expected to be issued by APEC leaders.

APEC leaders will also discuss food safety at the September 8-9 summit following a spate of recalls and concerns over Chinese food products, an Australian official said on Monday.
