BEIJING: China on Thursday voiced concern over the sharp rise in international prices of grains and pledged an additional donation of USD two million to the UN World Food Programme meant for the poor.

"China is highly concerned about the rise of international grain price which has affected the developing countries and caused shortage of funds for the Programme", Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters here.

He said Chinese government had already donated USD 2.5 million and announced the additional funds.

"The Chinese government is ready to continue support to the World Food Programme and will work with international community to respond to the current challenge", he said.

As rising prices hit its budget, the World Food Programme last month pleaded for an additional USD 755 million to bridge the deficit. The United Nations has said the rising grain prices have made it impossible for the poor to buy enough food.
