China signs power station deal in Tajikistan

China's Sinohydro on Wednesday signed a deal to build a new hydro-electric power station in Tajikistan in Central Asia worth up to 300 million dollars (204 million euros), officials said.

DUSHANBE: China's Sinohydro on Wednesday signed a deal to build a new hydro-electric power station in Tajikistan in Central Asia worth up to 300 million dollars (204 million euros), officials said.

"The Chinese company undertakes to carry out the design and construction of the Nurobod" power station in eastern Tajikistan, read a memorandum of understanding signed by Sinohydro and the Tajik government.

The deal was signed on the sidelines of a visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao aimed at bolstering economic ties between the two neighbours.

Hu and Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon were to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a regional security group, on Thursday.

Trade between China and Tajikistan amounted to 283 million dollars last year. China is already a major player in Tajikistan's road infrastructure, telecoms and electricity sectors.
