China says economic recovery 'consolidated'

China said on Wednesday that the Asian nation's economic recovery was solid, in a sign of confidence ahead of the release of key third-quarter economic data.

BEIJING: China said on Wednesday that the Asian nation's economic recovery was solid, in a sign of confidence ahead of the release of key third-quarter economic data.

"In the past three quarters... China's economic and social development situation has done better than forecast at the beginning of the year," the State Council, or cabinet, said in a statement released on its website.

"The positive trend of recovery has been consolidated," said the statement, issued after a meeting headed by Premier Wen Jiabao.

China, the world's third largest economy, had so far maintained that its recovery from the global financial crisis was not firm.

In comments made in Turkey earlier this month, China's finance minister Xie Xuren said the economic rebound had yet to be "stable, firm and balanced".

Wen issued a statement a month ago at a conference in Dalian, saying the recovery was "not yet stable, nor is it consolidated or balanced".

China is due to announce official third-quarter gross domestic product data on Thursday.

The Chinese economy expanded 7.1 percent in the first half from a year earlier, after growing 6.1 percent in the first quarter and 7.9 percent in the second.

Beijing is targeting eight percent growth for 2009, which it sees as essential for job creation and keeping a lid on social unrest.
