Carrefour to build store in Siberia amid Russian growth

Carrefour, Europe’s biggest retailer, plans to build a store in the Siberian city of Tyumen as it expands in Russia after entering the country this year.

MOSCOW: Carrefour, Europe’s biggest retailer, plans to build a store in the Siberian city of Tyumen as it expands in Russia after entering the country this year. The Paris-based company is seeking land on which to construct a hypermarket in the city, the local government said Wednesday on its website.

Stanislas de Laboulaye, France’s ambassador to Russia, visited Tyumen with French businessmen on Tuesday and met with the city’s governor Vladimir Yakushev, according to the statement.

Carrefour aims to capitalise on rising incomes and consumer spending in Russia, whose economy is growing for a 10th year. The French company has said it plans to open its first Russian store this year, though has yet to say where or when that will be.

Carrefour plans to open 1.2 million square metres’ worth of new stores per year, excluding acquisitions, with most new space focused on developing countries, chief executive officer Jose Luis Duran said August 30. The company is scheduled to release Q4 sales after French stock trading ends on Wednesday.

France’s Accor, Europe’s biggest hotel owner, is also building a hotel in Tyumen that’s planned to be completed within two years, the city’s statement said.
