LONDON: Carphone Warehouse Group PLC, Europe's largest mobile telephone dealer, said on Thursday that it plans to eliminate 450 head office and support jobs in Britain, but said retail outlets will not be affected.

The planned cuts, subject to a 90-day consultation with employees, represent 3.6 percent of the company's work force.

A company spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with company policy, said Carphone hoped that many of the affected employees could move into other positions.

The rollout of Carphone's European joint venture with U.S. retailer Best Buy would not be affected, the spokesman said.

Carphone Warehouse shares were up 1.4 percent at 107.75 pence on the London Stock Exchange.
