Canadian mint unveils first gold, silver bullion Olympic coins

The Royal Canadian Mint on Wednesday introduced the world's first gold and silver bullion coins promoting the spirit of the Olympic Games.

OTTAWA: The Royal Canadian Mint on Wednesday introduced the world's first gold and silver bullion coins promoting the spirit of the Olympic Games.

The Mint said in a statement it would produce up to 50,000 coins in gold for the 2008 issue, as well as silver coins on demand, with permission from the International Olympic Committee.

Two more issues will follow in 2009, and 2010, just in time for Canada's hosting of the Winter Games in Vancouver.

"Gold and silver have long symbolized the pinnacle of international athletic competition and we are delighted that the Royal Canadian Mint's world-renowned bullion coins are now associated with the Olympic Movement," mint president Ian Bennett said in a statement.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin is made from one ounce of 99.99 percent pure gold and bears a 50-dollar face value.

Bearing a five-dollar face value, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin is forged from one ounce of 99.99 percent pure silver.
