Canadian Auto Workers at three GM plants ratify new deal

Canadian Auto Workers at three General Motors plants ratified a new labor deal Saturday that mirrors agreements the union has forged with other major automakers.

TORONTO: Canadian Auto Workers at three General Motors plants ratified a new labor deal Saturday that mirrors agreements the union has forged with other major automakers.

The agreement covers facilities in Windsor, Oshawa, and St. Catharines, all in Ontario. The auto giant and the union were also awaiting a final vote from a General Motors facility in Woodstock, Ontario.

The agreement closely follows a deal established at Ford two weeks earlier and includes commitments by General Motors to continue building new vehicles at facilities in both Oshawa, Ontario and the St. Catharines, Ontario, the union said in a statement Saturday.

Under the tentative deal, reached on Thursday, the plant in Oshawa will begin building a new Camaro sports car, along with a rear-wheel drive car. The deal also preserves one shift at the truck assembly factory in Oshawa until 2009.

As with the Ford agreement, the union said the three-year deal keeps the automaker's labor costs essentially the same as they are now, preventing a two-tier wage system used in the United States where new hires would be paid about half the hourly wages of older employees. The deal also freezes wages.
The deal replaces a GM contract that expires in September and will cover close to 13,000 GM workers.
CAW workers Saturday were also slated to vote a new agreement with Chrysler which is similar to the one approved at Ford and GM, and which would affect 8,000 Chrysler workers.
